In1638,ConnecticutinNorthAmericabecameaBritishcolony.AgroupofPuritansfromBritaintooktheMayfloweracrosstheoceantosettleinQuinnipiacBayandgraduallydevelopeditintoaprosperousNewHavenPort.PastorJohnDavenportbelievedthateducationcouldallowEuropeancivilizationtotakerootintheUnitedStates,soheproposedtoestablishauniversityhere.Althoughhisplanwasrepeatedlyfrustrated,histhinkinghasaffectedmanylocalpeople.
BecauseofthePuritanleaderC.MatherwasdeeplydissatisfiedwithHarvardUniversity'sincreasingtolerancetowardsnon-believers,soheencouragedtheBritishbusinessmenE.Yaledonatedmoneytobuildthisnewschool.TothankMr.Yaleforhisdonation,theschoolofficiallychangeditsnameto"YaleCollege",whichisnowthepredecessorofYaleUniversity.Theinitialcurriculumoftheschoolfocusedonclassicalsubjectsandadheredtoorthodoxreligiousviews.In1828,theUnitedStatesproposedthatthecurriculumofuniversitiesshouldfocusonpracticalsubjects.ThepresidentofYaleUniversityJ.Daipublishedthe"YaleReport"todefendtraditionalcourses.ThisreportstillhadanimpactuntilaftertheCivilWarandsloweddowntheprocessofintroducingpracticalliberalartscoursesinAmericanuniversities.In1908,YaleUniversitynolongerrequiredstudentstolearnancientGreekasacompulsorylanguage.AtthetimetheprincipalA.UndertheinfluenceofHadley,hebegantofocusonprofessionaltraining.Theuniversitylibraryhas6millionbooksandisoneofthelargestlibrariesintheUnitedStates.TheYaleUniversityArtMuseumwasbuiltin1823andhasawiderangeofcollections.ItisoneoftheearliestartmuseumsestablishedinAmericanuniversities.ThePeabodyMuseumofNaturalHistoryatYaleUniversityhousesimportantartifactsinpaleontology,archaeology,andhumanculture.Before1969,Yaleonlyenrolledboys,andthenco-edschools.
In1701,agroupofCongregationalmissionariesledbyJamesPierpondpersuadedtheConnecticutcourttoagreetoestablishamissionschoolsothatyoungpeople"canstudyartandsciencetoservethechurchandthecountry.",10pastorsentrustedtomanagetheschooltookout40booksfromtheirlimitedlibraryascapitalfortheestablishmentoftheschool.InOctober1701,thepastorselectedAbrahamPearson,agraduateofHarvardUniversity,asthefirstprincipal,andthechurchschoolwasformallyestablished.ButitwasnotuntilMarchofthefollowingyearthattheschoolhaditsfirststudent,JacobHemingway.In1707,thefirstgroupof18studentswereawardedabachelor'sdegree.Atthebeginning,theschoolhadnoschoolbuildings,andstudentswerescatteredinsixcitiesinConnecticuttostudy.In1716,thetrusteesvotedunanimouslytomovetheschooltoNewHaven.
In1718,Mr.ElihuYale,aseniorofficialoftheBritishEastIndiaCompany,donated9bundlesofgoodsworth562poundsand12shillings,417booksandKingGeorgeItothischurchschool.TheportraitandcoatofarmsofYalewerenothingshortofagifttotheinfantYaleatthetime.Fromthe1830stothe1980s,undertheunremittingeffortsoftheBishopofBerkeley,ReverendStyles,andPresidentPorter,Yalegraduallydevelopedfromacollegetoauniversity.
Laterdevelopment
Bythebeginningofthe20thcentury,withtherapiddevelopmentofAmericaneducation,YaleUniversityhasgrowntoanastonishingscaleanditsinfluenceintheworldhasalsoreachednewheights.
ThecurrentpresidentofYaleUniversity,PeterSalovey,summarizedtheschool’sdevelopmentprioritiesforthenext100years:“Firstofall,asoneofthebestresearchuniversitiesintheUnitedStates,YaleUniversityattachesgreatimportancetoundergraduateeducation.Quality.Secondly,thegraduateschoolsandprofessionalcolleges,togetherwithYaleCollege,arecommittedtocultivatingleadersandfamousfiguresinallfieldsoftheworld."

School-runningphilosophy
OneofthegoalsofYale'shumanitieseducationistocultivatestudents'humanisticfeelings-arationalattitudetoexplorethetruemeaningoflife,thatis,caringTherealizationofthevalueoflife,thefreedomandequalityofman,theharmonybetweenmanandsocietyandnature.Therefore,ontheYaleschoolbadge,thewords"brightnessandtrueknowledge"arewritten,thatis,toinherittheEuropeanhumanitiestraditions,forthechurch,morespecificallyfortheaxioms,andforthepeopletotrainclergy-inYale1701Thecharterstates:Thepurposeofeducationistoenableyoungpeopleto"servethechurchandpublicutilities."ThecurrentprincipalRichardLevinealsosaid:"Letyoungstudentsusetheiracademic,artisticandotherprofessionalachievementstocontributetosocietyandworkfortheimprovementofhumanlivingconditions."
Atthebeginningofthe19thcentury,theUnitedStatesproposedthatthecurriculumofuniversitiesshouldfocusonpracticaldisciplines.ManyuniversitiesintheeasternUnitedStateshaveestablishedpracticaldisciplines.ThewaveofcurriculumreformimpactedAmericanuniversitiesandYale,whichisknownforitsconservativeness.Itquicklyrespondedtothiswave.Asaresult,in1828,undertheleadershipofPresidentJeremiahDay,YalePublishedthefamous"YaleReport".
The"YaleReport"stronglyaffirmedtheimportantvalueofhumanisticeducationbasedonclassicalsubjectsandrejectedthepracticaleducationofscience,claimingthat"nothingismorepracticalthanagoodtheory,andnothingismorepracticalthanhumaneeducation.Itisevenmoreuseful.Theteachingcoursesofferedforundergraduatesinuniversitiesdonotincludevocationalstudies.Specializationmuststartlater...Mentaltrainingwillmakestudentsmoreresponsibleforsociety.”Thereportishostiletopracticalvocationalandtechnicalcoursesandinsiststhatextensiveandin-depthstudyofcommondisciplinesisofgreatbenefittotheformationofgoodeducationandhumanisticcareforstudents.
Thepublicationofthe"YaleReport"hashadahugeimpactontheAmericanhighereducationcommunity.Intheearly19thcentury,thefreedomofstudyinGermanyhadaprofoundimpactontheUnitedStates.Americanuniversitiesnotonlyacceptedtheideaoffreedomofstudy,butalsoinstitutionalizedthefreedomofstudyforthefirsttimebyestablishinganelectivesystemandacreditsystem.However,theestablishmentoftheelectivesystemintheUnitedStateshasundergoneatortuousprocess.AsearlyasThomasJefferson'stime,boththeCollegeofWilliamandMaryandtheUniversityofVirginiahadadoptedelectivecourses,buttheseearlyreformswerequicklyhaltedbythepublicationoftheYaleReportin1828.
Inordertoupholdtheuniversity’sacademicmissionofpursuingtruthandincreasingknowledge,ProfessorSchmidtd,whobecamepresidentin1986,emphasizedthatYalemustadheretoabsolutefreedomofthoughtandanunshakablebeliefinacademicpursuits.HeisstillAttheopeningceremony,itwasemphasizedthatYale'sfreshmenshouldacceptthisnewuniversityconceptlikeeverygenerationofalumniolderthanthem.Yaleregardsthecultivationofstudentstobecome"responsiblecitizens"withpatriotismandresponsibilitiesandobligationstothecountryastheloftygoalofcollegemoraleducation,andemphasizesthatstudentsmusthavethe"nationalspirit"oftheUnitedStatesandbestrongintheUnitedStatesatalltimes.Iamproudandresponsibleforthis,and"Americanize"theinfluxofnewimmigrants.
Someareasthathavebeenneglectedorchallenginginquantitativereasoning,suchasraceandethnicminorities,women,etc.Morethan100studentsparticipateiniteveryyear.

AsPrincipalRichardLevinesaid:“Educatingpeopletoservesocietydoesnotmeanthateducationmustfocusonmasteringpracticalskills.YalepursuesStudentsprovideabroadandfreeeducationalworldview,ratherthannarrow,restrictivevocationaleducation,sothattheyhavemoreleadershipandserviceawareness.YaleUniversityisalsoacommunitythatrespectsandlearns,andcherishesfreeexpressionandunderstandingofeverythingintheworld.Inthiscommunity,theinteractivemodeofpeoplealsoservesthesociety."
Studenteducationsystem
(1)Coursecharacteristics
Yaleattachesgreatimportancetoundergraduateeducation,soYaleCollegeisthecoreofYaleeducation.Allprofessorsofferundergraduatecourses.Everyyear,morethan65departmentsandprogramsprovideover2,000coursesforundergraduates,manyofwhicharetaughtbyYale’sbesthistorians,literarycritics,scientists,engineers,mathematicians,artists,composers,andpoets.Theacademicatmosphereisextremelyfriendlyandactive,whichisunimaginableinthoseresearchuniversitiesthatdonotpayattentiontobasicteaching.
AlthoughYalerespectstraditionaleducationverymuch,itdoesnotsetspecificcurriculumrequirementsforstudents,nordoesithaveaso-calledcorecurriculum.Instead,ithasamorerelaxedcourseselectionsystem.Yalerequiresstudentstohavebothdepthandbreadthintheirlearning:withdepth,thatis,studentshavetolearnprofessionalcourses;withbreadth,thatis,studentshavetoengageinthreeareas(ie,humanitiesandarts,naturalsciences,andsocialsciences)andthreeskills(writing,quantitativeReasoning,foreignlanguage)learning.Yaleprovidesstudentswith80professionalcoursesand53foreignlanguagecourses.
AtYale,entry-levelcoursesareusuallylargelecturesandsomesmallseminarshostedbygraduatestudents.Somecourseswerewarmlywelcomedbystudents,suchasProfessorJohnGaddis'sHistoryoftheColdWar,whichlookedlikeaperformance.High-levelseminarcoursesareusuallysmallclassesandnumerous.Seniorstudentsdon'thavetoworryaboutnotbeingabletochoosetheirfavoritecourses.Freshmenseminarsalsogivefreshmenampleopportunitiestocommunicatewithprofessors.Mostofthecourseshereareveryinterestingandexciting.
Inthefirsttwoweeksofthesemester,studentscantryoutvariousclassesandfinallydecidewhichclassestotake.Yalerequiresstudentstohaveanintermediatelevelofmasteryofaforeignlanguage,soeachstudentmustlearnaforeignlanguageforatleastonesemester.Accordingtotheirpersonallearningsituation,determinewhethertheyneedtolearnoneortwosemestersmore.
"FreshmanSeminars"(FreshmanSeminars)aresmallclasses,someofwhicharetaughtbyseniorYaleprofessors.Someseminarswillgiveageneralintroductiontolearninginaparticularfield,andsomewillexploreinterdisciplinaryresearchmethodsforvariouscourses.
"DirectedStudies"(DirectedStudies)isanelectiveinterdisciplinaryprojectforfreshmenofWesterncivilization,includingthreecoursesofliterature,philosophy,andhistoryandpolitics,whichlastforoneyear.StudentscanIreadimportantworksoftheWesterntraditionontheInternet.Excellentstudentswhoareparticularlyinterestedinliberalartscanrequesttojointhisproject,buttheymustbepreparedtohaveclosecontactwithbooks,whichiswhytheprojecthasaterrifyingnicknamecalledthe"guidedsuicideproject".
"PerspectivesonScienceandEngineering"(PerspectivesonScienceandEngineering)isanelectivelectureanddiscussioncourseforfreshmenofscienceandFreshmenjointheYaleScienceSocietytobuildbridges.Studentswhoareparticularlyinterestedinsciencecanparticipateinthisenhancedproject.
"ScienceandEngineeringUndergraduateResearch"(ScienceandEngineeringUndergraduateResearch)isaresearchcourse.Yaleisaworld-classresearchuniversity.Independentscientificresearch,engineeringresearch,anddesignprojectsareanintegralpartofYale'sundergraduatescienceeducation.Yale'sSchoolofArtsandSciences,SchoolofMedicine,andSchoolofForestryandEnvironmentalStudieshave43degree-grantingprogramsandmorethan800departmentlaboratories.Scienceandengineeringfreshmencanbegintheirinitialscientificresearchintheirfirstyearofadmission.Theannualsummerresearchscholarshipforfreshmencanprovidefundingformorethan100scienceandengineeringstudents.

Yale’smostimportantmanagementfeatureis"SchoolManagementbyProfessors",whichhashadahugeimpactontheAmericanhighereducationcommunity.Intheearlydaysoftheschool,throughtheeffortsofthreegenerationsofprincipals,Yalegraduallyformedalawthattheboardofdirectorsdidnotspecificallyparticipateinthemanagementoftheschool,butthattheprofessorswouldgoverntheschool.IntheUnitedStatesatthetime,therewasasaying:"ThePrincetondirectorisinpower,theHarvardpresidentisthehead,andtheYaleprofessoristhemaster."
Formorethan300years,Yalepeoplehavealwaysbeenproudofbeingabletoadheretothespiritofindependence,withoutexternalpoliticalpressure,andmaterialincentivestocompromise.Inthemid-18thcentury,whenThomasClapwasdean,heinsistedonYaleItisanaristocraticprivateschoolandemphasizestheindependenceoftheuniversity.Tothisend,hetookallpossiblemeanstoresisttheinterferenceofthelocalgovernmentuntilheresortedtothelaw.DuringtheVietnamWarinthe1960s,theUSgovernmentorderedthatstudentswhoclaimedtobeanti-waronmoralorreligiousgroundswerenotallowedtoreceivescholarships.Atthattime,manyprestigiousschoolsintheUnitedStatesallfollowedtheinstructionsofthegovernment.OnlyYaleadherestotheconsistentstyleofacademicindependenceandcontinuestoconsidertheapplicant'sperformanceastheonlyprincipleforconsideringscholarships,completelydisregardinggovernmentregulations.Asaresult,Yalelostalargeamountoffundsfromthefederalgovernmentandgotintofinancialdifficultiesseveraltimes,butitsbeliefsremainedunchanged.ThecurrentpresidentRichardLevinealsorefusedthe$20milliondonationwithouthesitationbecausedonorsmadeadditionalrequirementsforYale'scoursesandtheappointmentofprofessors.
EvenwhentheformerPresidentBushwasinvitedbacktohisalmamatertoreceiveanhonorarydoctorateoflaw,Yaleprofessorsandstudentspubliclyexpressedtheiropposition:ItwasMay21,2001,thetraditionalgraduationOnthesameday,whentheprincipalannouncedthatBushwasawardedanhonorarydoctorateoflaw,thestudentsrespondedwithlaughter,booingandwhistle.TheyalsoheldplacardscondemningtheBushadministration’spoliciesonissuessuchastheenvironment,thedeathpenalty,andabortion.About200professorsalsosignedacollectiverefusaltoattendthegraduationceremony,believingthatneitherBushnortheschoolwasdoingitpurelytogainreputation,becauseBushwasnotqualifiedtoacceptsuchanhonorarytitlebasedonhisperformanceandachievementsinschool.
ProfessorTianChanglin,theformerpresidentoftheUniversityofCalifornia,oncesaid:"IntheUnitedStates,everyonehasarealizationthatwhichschoolhasstrongprofessorsandwhichschoolwillbecomethemostfamousschoolinthefuture."Professorsnotonlygoverntheschool.BeingregardedasastandardbyBerkeleyisalsorespectedbyYaleformorethan300years.

OnthepeacefulcampusofYaleUniversityThereisasmallbuildinginthestyleofaGreektemple.Severallongandnarrowwindowsareclosedallyearround.Thewholebuildingisshroudedinadeepmystery.ThisunremarkablebuildingisthelocationofthemostmysteriousandpowerfulalumniassociationintheUnitedStates.Itisneveropentooutsiders,andalwaysmaintainsitsownmaverickcolorandelitestyle,anditalsohasachillingnamecalled"SkullandBones".TheSkullandBoneshaveextremelymysteriousrulesformembership.Whatisevenmoredauntingisthelistofitsmembers.FromthisSkullandBones,thereare3USpresidents,2SupremeCourtjustices,andcountlessUScongressmenandseniorcabinetofficials.After172yearsofmultiplication,membersoftheSkullandBonesarealmosteverywherefromtheWhiteHouse,Congress,cabinetministries,theSupremeCourt,andeventheCentralIntelligenceAgency.
WhenPresidentBushandDemocraticpresidentialcandidateJohnKerryfiercelycompetedfortheUSpresidentialthrone,AmericansweresurprisedtofindthateventhoughthetwopresidentialcandidatesarefromdifferentpartiesandhaveverydifferentpoliticalopinionsTheyareallmembersoftheSkullandBones.Kerryjoinedtheclubin1965,andBushjoinedtheSkullandBonestwoyearslater.Themysteriousskeletonsbegantosurface.
WilliamHuntingtonRussellisagraduateofYaleUniversityin1833.HelaterbecameamemberoftheConnecticutlegislatureandageneralofthestate'sNationalGuard.DuringhisstayinGermany,Russellmettheleaderofasecretsocietycalled"SkullandBones"inGermany.ThisclubwasadevilishderivativeofanotoriousprophetorganizationinEuropeinthe18thcentury,butRussellwasdeeplyimpressedbytheclub'spurpose,membershipspirit,andstrictjoiningconditionsandorganizationalmethods.In1832,RussellreturnedtoYaleUniversity.Hedecidedtocreateasocietythatwasmoreritual,moresecret,andpromotedthepurposeofFreemasonrysolidarityandmutualassistancethanotherclubsorfraternitiesofYaleUniversity.RussellthengatheredAlfonsoTaft,themostpromisingclassmateintheclass(AlfonsoTaftlaterbecameMinisterofDefense,AttorneyGeneral,MinistertoAustralia,AmbassadortoRussia,andhissonWilliamTaftTuolaterbecamethe27thPresidentoftheUnitedStates.Hewasamemberofthe1887session)andofficiallyfoundedtheAmericanversionofthe"SkullandBones".Aftermorethan170yearsofself-reproduction,thecabinet,theSenateandHouseofRepresentatives,theSupremeCourt,theCentralIntelligenceAgencyandotherdepartmentsallcontrolthemostpowerful"invisibleempire."Inthe"SkullandBones",eachmemberhasitsownnickname.Forexample,"LongMo"isforthehighestmemberoftheclub,and"Magog"isforthememberwiththemostexperienceinsex.Bushenjoysthe"famousreputation"ofMagog.AsforGeorgeW.Bush,becausewhenhejoinedtheconference,othermembersdidn'tknowwhattocallhim,sotheysimplygavehimthenickname"Temporary."

YaleUniversitysponsors35school-levelsportsteamstoparticipateintheIvyLeague,EastAmericanUniversitySportsLeague,andNewEnglandIntercollegiateSailingLeague.YaleUniversityisalsoafirst-levelmemberoftheNCAA(NationalCollegeAthleticAssociation).LikeotherIvyLeaguememberuniversities,Yaledoesnotprovidescholarshipsspecificallyforathletes,anditisnolongeramongthetopteamsinbasketballandAmericanfootball.However,YaleUniversityisthebirthplaceofAmericanfootball,whichwasborrowedfromfootballandsoccerbythethenplayerandcoachWalterCampinthelate19thandearly20thcenturies.Yalehasalargenumberofsportsfacilities,includingYaleStadium(alsoknownasthe"YaleBowl"becauseofitsshape,andthefirststadiumintheUnitedStates),WalterCampFieldSportsCenter,PayneWhitneySports/FitnessHall,CorinthianYachtClub(foundedin1881,itwastheworld'sfirstuniversityyachtclubandtrainedmanyOlympicathletes).

YaleUniversityisfamousforitsclassicalandromanticcampusenvironment.Andsomemodernbuildingsareoftenusedasmodelsinthehistoryofarchitectureintextbooks,includingLouisKahn’sYaleUniversityArtGallery,YaleUniversityBritishArtCenter;EeroSaarinen’sIngallsSkatingRink,EzraStilesCollegeandMorseCollege;AndtheDepartmentofArtandArchitecturedesignedbyPaulRudolph.
MostoftheancientbuildingsatYaleareinGothicstyle,mostlybuiltbetween1917and1931.Alargenumberofreliefsshowthecollegelifeatthattime:therearewriterswhothinkhard,athletesrunningwild,sociablesdrinkingtea,studentsdozingasleepwhilestudying,andsoon.ThesculpturesintheYaleLawSchoolBuilding(theofficialnameistheStirlingLawBuilding)alsoshowcontemporaryscenes,includingscenesofpolicechasingrobbersandarrestingprostitutes.Inordertomakethebuildinglookold,thearchitectJamesGambleRogersusedacidonthestonewalls,deliberatelybreakingtheglass,andusedmedievalmethodstosupplementit,andartificiallyaddedmanyemptydecorativeniches,likesculptures.Hasbeenlostforalongtime.AlthoughmostofthebuildingsontheYaleUniversity’scentralcampusareinamedievalarchitecturalstyle,usinglarge-scalestone,infact,mostofthemusethegeneralsteelframeof1930.TheonlyexceptionistheHarknessTower,whichis216feethigh.Atthetimeofconstruction,itwasthetallestall-stonestructureintheworld.Thetowerwasreinforcedin1964toinstallaYalememorialgroupclockinsideit,withatotalof54bells.Nowthebellisplayedeverydayat12:30noonand5:00pmbyadedicatedstudentgroupofYaleUniversity.ThemusicselectedrangesfromclassicbellstotheBeatles.
TheoldestbuildingonthecampusisGeorgian,anditseemsmoremodern.Thisbuildingcalled"ConnecticutHall"wasbuiltin1750andisnowlocatedintheOldCampus,wheretheDepartmentofPhilosophyislocated.OtherGeorgian-stylebuildingsonthecampusincludeTimothyDwight,CollegePiersonCollegeandDavenportCollege(excludingthefacadealongYorkStreet,whichareinGothicstyle).
TheBeineckeRareBooksandAncientBooksLibrarywasdesignedbyGordonBunshaft.Itisthelargestcollectionofrareandancientbooksintheworldtoday.Thesix-storybookstoreabovethegroundofthelibraryissurroundedbyaglasscube,andtheoutsideoftheglasscubeiscoveredbyalarger"box"thatdoesnottouchit.Thewallsofthisbuildingaremadeoftwo-foot-squaretranslucentmarblefromVermont,sotheinteriorofthebuildingcanbeslightlybrightandpreventotherharmfulraysinthesunfromdamagingthecollectionofbooks.ThesculptureinasunkencourtyardinthesquarewasdesignedbyIsamuNoguchiandrepresentstime(pyramid),sun(circularstructure)andprobability(obliquecube).
ThefamousarchitectEeroSaarinenwhograduatedfromYaleUniversity(whodesignedthefamousArchofSt.Louis,themainbuildingofWashingtonDullesInternationalAirport,theCBSBuildinginManhattan,etc.)wasresponsibleforthedesignofYaleUniversity’sIngallsicerinkandthelatesttworesidentialcolleges,MorseandEzraStiles.ThesemodernbuildingsinspiredbytheItalianmountaintownofSanGimignianoareinsharpcontrastwithotherbuildingsintheGothicstyle.
Inaddition,thePayneWhitneySports/FitnessHallatYaleUniversityisstilltheworld’slargestgymnasium,includingswimming,skatingsimulationpool,basketballhall,gymnasium,fencinghallandotherOlympicevents,includingthreeTheonlypermanentglasssquashcourtofthehigheststandardinNorthAmericaandotherworld-classequipment.Thesedevicesarefreeforundergraduatestudents,andgraduatestudentsneedtochargesomefees.
