OnApril3,2019,UniversityofWashingtoncomputerprofessorShwetakPatelwonthe2018ACMComputerAwardforhisimportantcontributionstotheInternetofThingsandmedicalfields.TheACMComputerAwardandtheACMTuringAwardarethehighestawardsintheworld'scomputerfield.

OnOctober2,2017,JeffreyC.Hall,aPhDandgeneticistattheUniversityofWashington,discoveredthemolecularmechanismscontrollingthecircadianrhythm.Wonthe2017NobelPrizeinPhysiologyorMedicine.

OnOctober4,2016,ProfessorofPhysicsattheUniversityofWashington,DavidJ.Thouless(DavidJ.Thouless)wonthe2016NobelPrizeinPhysics.Hediscoveredtopologicalphasetransitionsandtopologicalquantumstatesofmatterinatwo-dimensionalphysicalsystem.DavidSoliswasborninScotlandin1934,receivedabachelor'sdegreefromCambridgeUniversityin1955andadoctoratedegreefromCornellUniversityin1958.DavidSolisjoinedtheUniversityofWashingtonin1980andhasconductedin-depthresearchontopologicalphasetransitionsandtopologicalquantumstatesofmatterintwo-dimensionalphysicalsystems,andhasbeenaprofessorofphysicsuntilnow.DavidSoliswasselectedasamemberoftheNationalAcademyofSciencesin1995andisaworld-renownedtheoreticalcondensedmatterphysicist.

OnOctober25,2016,BillGatesannouncedattheUniversityofWashington:TheBillandMelindaGatesFoundationdonatedUS$210million(1.415billionyuan)totheUniversityofWashingtontobuildahumanhealthteachingThebuildingcontributestothescientificresearchofhumanhealth.PresidentAnnaMarieCoasesincerelythankedBillGatesforhiscontinuousdonationtotheUniversityofWashington,anddeclared:TheUniversityofWashingtonhasraisedatotalof500millionUSdollars(3.5billionyuan)by2020,whichwillbeusedforhumanhealth,environmentalprotection,andenvironmentalprotectioninthenext25years.Researchinthefieldofsocialandeconomicequity.TheUniversityofWashingtonhasatotalbudgetofUS$7.067billion(48.55billion)in2017,andresearchexpendituresofUS$1.37billion(9.412billion).

Schoolhistory

TheUniversityofWashingtonwasformallyestablishedonNovember4,1861,andwasoriginallynamedTerritorialUniversityofWashington.Thefollowingyear,thelegislatureofficiallyincorporateditintotheuniversityandestablishedanappraisalcommittee.Atthebeginningoftheschool,theUniversityofWashingtonclosedseveraltimesduetoinsufficientfundsandshortageofstudents.Itwasnotuntil1876thatClaraAntoinetteMcCartyWiltbecamethefirstgraduateoftheUniversityofWashington,whereshereceivedaBachelorofSciencedegree.By1889,thecityofSeattleandtheUniversityofWashingtonhadachievedconsiderabledevelopment,andtheenrollmentoftheUniversityofWashingtonhadincreasedfromtheinitial30studentstonearly300.

In1895,theschoolmovedfromthecitycentertothenewcampusandmovedintothenewlybuiltDannyHall.TheUniversityofWashingtonstillownstheMetropolitanTractindowntownSeattle,whichisoneofSeattle’smostvaluablerealestate,generatingmillionsofdollarsinrevenuefortheUniversityofWashingtoneveryyear.

In1908,theoriginalTerritorialUniversityofWashingtonbuildingwasdemolished.OnlyfourpillarsremaininthefoundingbuildingoftheUniversityofWashington.TheheadoftheDepartmentofHistory,MinnieandhiscolleagueHerbertCondon,namedthefourpillars"Loyalty","Industry","Faith"and"Efficiency".Togethertheyare"Life".life".ThesefourpillarscurrentlyexistintheSylvanGroveTheaterattheUniversityofWashington.

In1909,theorganizersoftheYukonTerritoryExpositioninAlaskareachedanagreementwiththeUniversityofWashingtontoopentheundevelopedcampusasanexhibitionarea.TheexpositionparkdesignedbythefamouslandscapearchitectJohnCharlesOlmstedwaslaterintegratedintothemasterplanoftheUniversityofWashingtoncampusandpermanentlyaffectedthelayoutofthecampus.

Beforeandafterthetwoworldwars,theUniversityofWashingtonwasaperiodofrapiddevelopment.Thefamous"HumanSquareQuad"attheUniversityofWashingtonwasbuiltin1916,andconstructioncontinueduntil1939.ThefirsttwowingsoftheSuzzalloLibrarywerecompletedin1926and1939,respectively.Itisconsideredthecorebuildingoftheuniversity.ThemostimportantdevelopmentduringthisperiodwasthecreationoftheUniversityofWashingtonSchoolofMedicineandtheUniversityofWashingtonMedicalCenterin1946.Theworld-renownedWashingtonUniversitySchoolofMedicineandMedicalCenterhaslongbeenlistedasthetopfiveAmericanmedicalschoolsandmedicalcentersby"U.S.NewsandWorldReport"andprofessionalinstitutions.

Inthe1960sand1970s,theUniversityofWashingtonusheredinthe"goldenage"ofdevelopment.From1958to1973,undertheleadershipofPresidentCharlesOdegaard,theresources,faculty,facilities,andmanagementoftheUniversityofWashingtonThebudgetandacademicreputationhavebeengreatlyimproved,makingitoneofthetopresearchuniversitiesintheworld.PresidentOdegaardenvisionedtheestablishmentofa"communityofscholars"andpersuadedtheWashingtonStatelegislaturetoincreasetheirinvestmentintheuniversity.Inaddition,WashingtonStateSenatorsHenryJacksonandWarrenG.Magnussenusedtheirpoliticalinfluencetoobtainfederalresearchfunding.Since1974,theUniversityofWashingtonhasalwaysbeenthepublicuniversitywiththemostfederalR&DfundingintheUnitedStatesduetoitsoutstandingacademicresearchcapabilities.

Formorethanonehundredyears,theUniversityofWashingtonhascultivatedcountlesspoliticalelites,businessgiants,andscientificgiants.ResearchersandalumnioftheUniversityofWashingtonhavebroughtmanymajorinventionsthathavechangedthecourseofhistory:inventedhepatitisBvaccineandkidneydialysisthatbenefitallmankind,pilotedaspacecrafttoexplorethemoon,drewahumangeneticmaptorevealthemysteryoflife,andhostedthedesignLunarorbitingspacecraft,presidedoverthedesignoftheColumbiaSpaceShuttle,trained11spaceastronauts(only9inChinaand7intheUniversityofMichigan),ledthedesignoftheworld’slargestBoeing747airliner,anddesignedtheworld-renownedThecomputeroperatedtheDOSsystem,inventedtheethylenesyntheticrubbertechnology,drovetheaircrafttoachieveabreakthroughinthespeedofsoundforthefirsttimeinhumanhistory,cultivatedtheworld'ssemiconductorindustrypioneers,andledtheworld'sthirdindustrialwave,andwasonthewestcoastoftheUnitedStatessuchasSeattle.FoundedtheAmericanandglobalmoderntechnologicalinnovationSiliconValleyandsoon.

TheUniversityofWashingtonislocatedintheUniversityDistrictofSeattle.InadditiontoitsmaincampusinSeattle,italsohastwocampusesinTacomaandBothell.Campuses:UniversityofWashingtonTacomacampusandUniversityofWashingtonBothellcampus.

AlmostallbuildingsonthemaincampusoftheUniversityofWashingtonarebasedonGothicarchitectureandGothicstyle.ThecentralsquareRedSquareiscoveredwithredbricks.ThelibrarySuzzalloLibraryfacingthesquareisatypicalGothicbuilding:numerousarchesareinlaidwithsculpturesoffigures,andintricatepatternsarecarvedonthedoorpostsandwindowframes.Thestainedglasswindowsinthereadingroomonthesecondfloorwillglowlightblueundertheafterglowofthesettingsun,addingalotofbrightcolorstothissolemnandsolemnbuilding.GodownthestepsontheleftsideofthesquareandyouwillseeacircularfountainDrumhellerFountain,withcherrytreesplantedonbothsidesoftheroad.YoucanseeMountRainierinthedistancewhenitisclear.NotfarfromthemainentranceoftheUniversityofWashingtonistheBurkeMuseumofNaturalHistory&Culture,andthereareseveraltalltotempolesattheentrance.ThemuseumdisplaysmanypreciousIndianculturalrelics,includingtotems,canoesandvarioushandmadeproducts.HenryArtGalleryisamodernartgallery,whereexhibitionsfocusingonmodernartworksareoftenheld.InadditiontothebeautifulcampusoftheUniversityofWashington,thereisalsoalivelyfoodshoppingstreetUniversityWayNE(alsoknownasTheAve),avarietyofrestaurantswithdifferentnationalflavors,andavarietyofothershops.

InMarch2017,GoogledonatedUS$10milliontotheUniversityofWashingtonfortheconstructionofanewcomputerscienceandengineeringbuilding.

InMarch2017,theGatesFoundationdonatedUS$15milliontotheUniversityofWashingtonfortheconstructionofanewcomputerscienceandengineeringbuilding.

In2017,PaulAllenandMicrosoftdonatedUS$50milliontotheDepartmentofComputerScience&Engineering-CSEattheUniversityofWashingtontoupgradetheDepartmentofComputerScienceandEngineeringtoPaulAllenComputerSciencePaulG.AllenSchoolofComputerScience&Engineerin.

InFebruary2019,thesecondbuilding(Bill&MelindaGatesCenterforComputerScience&Engineering)oftheUniversityofWashingtonwithacostof110millionUSdollarswasofficiallycompleted.TheJieheFoundationhasraisedmorethanUS$70million.

Teachingandenrollment
