Introduction

AsearlyasbeforeMarxandEngelswerealive,therewasanattempttopublishacompletecollectionoftheirworks.Notlongaftertherevolutionof1848-1849,Marxtriedtocompilehisarticlesintoatwo-volumecollection,butfailedforsomereason.Inhislateryears,EngelssetaboutpreparingtopublishthecompleteworksofMarxandhimself,butthisworkstoppedbecauseofhisdeath.

MarxandEngelshaveagreatfriendship.Theyhavecollaboratedonmanyworksintheirlifetime,suchas"GermanIdeology","HolyFamily","CommunistManifesto".Madegreatcontributionstothecauseofmankind.

AccordingtoLenin’sinitiativein1921,theCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofRussia(Bolsheviks)establishedtheMarxandEngelsResearchInstituteandbegantosystematicallycollectworks,manuscriptsandlettersofMarxandEngels.In1924,inaccordancewiththedecisionofthe13thCongressoftheCommunistPartyofRussia(Brazzaville),thepublicationof"TheCompleteWorksofMarxandEngels"wasinitiated.ThefirstRussianeditionof"TheCompleteWorksofMarxandEngels"begantobepublishedin1928,anditbasicallyendedin1941.Ithas28volumes(33volumes).Thisisthefirstrelativelycompletecompletecollection.Ithascollected1,250worksand3,300letters,ofwhich460worksandabout800letterswerepublishedforthefirsttime.

Whilepublishing"TheCompleteWorksofMarxandEngels",the"MarxandEngelsLibrary"hasbeenpublishedsince1924,andmanymanuscriptsofMarxandEngelshavebeenpublished.Someofthemwerelaterpublishedinthefirstandsecondeditionsof"CompleteWorks"inRussian,andsomewereonlypublishedin"WenKu".

From1955to1966,theMarxist-LeninistResearchInstituteoftheCentralCommitteeoftheSovietCommunistPartypublishedthesecondeditionof"TheCompleteWorksofMarxandEngels"inRussian,with39volumes(42volumes).Thiseditioncollectedatotalof5,500worksandlettersofMarxandEngels,whichwasnearly1,000morethanthefirstedition(includingabout600letters).Forexample,Marx’s"DasKapital"Volume4ishand-made,"(DasKapital)Volume1Outline"writtenbyEngels,andMarxandEngelspublishedinthe"NeucheRhein","NewYorkDailyTribune"andothernewspapers.Alargenumberofarticlesinthepast,aswellasmanymaterialsanddocumentsrelatedtotheactivitiesofthefoundersofMarxismintheFirstInternational.Later,11additionalvolumes(volumes40-50)werepublished,whichincludedalargenumberofMarxistswhohadnotbeenpublishedsofar.,Engels’manuscripts,articlesandletters,aswellassomearticlesthatwerenotincludedinVolumes1-39.

In1968,theCentralMarxist-LeninistInstituteoftheGermanUnitySocialistPartypublishedtheGermanversionof"TheCompleteWorksofMarxandEngels".Thereare39volumes(41volumes)and1supplement(2volumes).SincemostoftheworksandlettersofthefoundersofMarxismarewritteninGerman,theyarepublishedintheoriginallanguageinthisedition.

Theabovearetwointernationallyinfluentialandwidelydisseminatededitions.Onthebasisofthesetwoeditions,avarietyofeditionsofthe"CompleteWorks"havebeenpublished,suchasBulgarianedition,Japaneseedition,Koreanedition,Polishedition,Romanianedition,Serbian-Croatianedition,Czechedition,Hungarianedition.

TheEnglisheditionof"TheCompleteWorksofMarxandEngels"isplannedtobepublishedin50volumesandwillbeincludedinRussianThesecondeditionandsupplementarymaterials,includingthenewlydiscoveredworksandlettersofthefoundersofMarxisminrecentyears.AccordingtotheEnglishversion,theItalianversionof"TheCompleteWorksofMarxandEngels"hasalsobeguntobepublished.Inaddition,theFrenchversionofthecompleteworksoflettersIthasbeenpublishedandispreparingtopublishtheFrenchversionof"TheCompleteWorksofMarxandEngels".

Inparticular,accordingtoajointresolutionreachedbytheCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyoftheSovietUnionandtheCentralCommitteeoftheGermanUnitySocialistParty,theoriginalversionofthe"CompleteWorksofMarxandEngels"(MEGA)hasbeenpublished.TheoriginalversionincludesalltheworksofthefoundersofMarxismintheoriginalform,includingworks,articles,drafts,unfinishedmanuscripts,documents,lettersandnotesofthelabormovementdraftedbythem,abstracts,andexcerptsAndthesidenotestheymadeinthebook.Theadvantageofprintingwiththeoriginaltextisthatitcanreproducethereliabilityofthetexttothemaximumextent,sothatpeoplecanstudythethoughtsofMarxandEngelsmoreaccurately.Theoriginalversionwasoriginallyscheduledtobepublishedin100volumes.

OnJanuary29,1953,withtheapprovalofChairmanMaoZedong,theestablishmentoftheCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChinawascompiledbyMarx,Engels,LeninandStalin.Bureau,systematicallytranslatedandpublished"TheCompleteWorksofMarxandEngels","TheCompleteWorksofLenin"and"TheCompleteWorksofStalin".ThefirstChineseeditionof"TheCompleteWorksofMarxandEngels"isbasedonthetranslationofthesecondeditionofRussianPublished.From1956to1974,39volumes(41volumes)weresuccessivelypublished.From1979to1985,11volumes(12volumes)oftheRussianeditionweretranslatedandpublished,namelyvolumes40to50.ActuallyBy1983,all50volumes(53volumes)oftheChineseversionof"CompleteWorks"hadbeenpublished,about32millionwords,knownasthefirsteditionof"TheCompleteWorksofMarxandEngels".Atthesametime,morethan100comradesfromtheTranslationBureauworkeddayandnight,andcompletedthetranslationandpublicationof"TheCompleteWorksofStalin"in1958.Therewere13volumes,about3millionwords.In1959,the38volumesof"TheCompleteWorksofLenin"weretranslatedintoChineseandpublished,withabout16millionwords,"agifttothe10thanniversaryoftheNationalDay".

July1986,accordingtothedecisionoftheCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChinaandapprovedbytheSecretariatoftheCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChina,theworksoftheCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChinaMarx,Engels,LeninandStalinwerecompiledTheBureauhasalreadybegunpreparationsforthetranslationandpublicationofTheCompleteWorksofMarxandEngels,2ndChineseEdition.Thesecondeditionisabout60volumes,dividedinto4parts:thefirstpartisthetreatise(exceptthe"DasKapital"),thesecondpartisthe"DasKapital"anditsmanuscripts,thethirdpartisletters,andthefourthpartisnotes.Itisscheduledtostartpublishingbooksintheearly1990s,andallofthemwillbepublishedinmorethan20years.50volumes(61volumes)havebeenpublished.

Comparedwiththefirstedition,thesecondeditionhasthefollowingcharacteristics:

First,theoriginal"CompleteWorksofMarxandEngels"ismostlyfromTranslatedintoRussian.AlthoughthequalityoftheRussianversionisquitegood,thequalityofthetranslationisalwaysunsatisfactorywithoutthetranslationoftheoriginaltextofMarxandEngels.Thesecondeditiondecidedtore-editaccordingtotheoriginaltext.About60%ofMarxandMan’sworksarewritteninGerman,about30%arewritteninEnglish,andabout10%arewritteninFrenchandotherlanguages.

Fourth,intermsofeditingstyle,thefirsteditionisdividedintomainvolumeandsupplementaryvolume.Thiseditingmethodisnotscientific.Thesecondeditionisdifferentfromthefirstedition.Thesecondeditionisdividedintofourparts:thefirstpartisthevolumeofgeneralworks(volume1-29);thesecondpartisthevolumeof"Capital"anditsmanuscriptvolume(volume30-46);Thethirdpartisthelettervolume(47-60volumes);thefourthpartisthenotebookvolume(howmanyvolumeshavenotbeendeterminedyet).
