Foundingbackground
Before1895,thechiefengineerofChinaRailwayThelocationiscontrolledbyforeigners,atthistimeChina'sownrailwayscienceandtechnologypersonnelarescarce.
ThefirstpersonwhoproposedtoestablisharailwayschoolinChinawastheBritishJinda.In1891,heandhiscolleagueXueFuchengsaid:AmongtheforeignroadandminingtechnicianswhocametoChina,only"Kaipingrequestedthefirm,"ItwasrequestedbyYihe;GuoShidun,requestedbyDaye,wasrequestedbyJinDengqian.Thesetwowereeffective,andtherestweremixed."
September20,1893,hasservedasthechiefofBeiyangguanRailwayBureauTheengineerJindawrotetoLiHongzhang,thegovernorofZhiliandtheministerofBeiyang,andbasedontheneedsofChina'srailwaydevelopment,hesuggestedthataschoolshouldbeopenedtotrainChina'sownrailwayengineers.TheQinggovernmentdecidedtopostponetheoperationonthepretextoffundingdifficultiesandonlyallowedadditionalstudentstoberecruitedatTianjinWubeiSchool.
AftertheSino-JapaneseWarof1894-1895,whentheQinggovernmentwasplanningtobuildtheGuangdong-HanRailway,ChenBaozhen,thegovernorofHunan,madesuggestionstoWangWenshaoandZhangZhidong,whowereinchargeofthisroad:"Forthetimebeing,foreignengineersarenotneededfortheinitialsurveyoftheroad.".Atthesametime,WangWenshao,amemberoftheQinggovernment,andothersallputforwardtheideaofestablishingarailwayschool,andtheestablishmentofrailwayeducationhasbecomeamajorissueoftheQingcourt.
OnMay4,1896,Jinda,whowastransferredfromtheBeiyangguanRailwayBureautothechiefengineeroftheJinluRailway,onceagainwenttotheJinluRailwaySupervisorHuYufen,onceagainstatedhisproposalfortheestablishmentofarailwayschool,andfurtherproposedspecificmeasures.,Draftedthe16articlesattachedtothe"ArticlesofRegulationsoftheRailwayEngineeringDepartmentinChina".HuXuanforwardedJinda'sletteranditsattachmentstoWangWenshao,thenewgovernorofZhiliandtheministerofBeiyang.Notlongafter,WangWenshaoapprovedtheestablishmentofarailwayschoolandinstructedHuYufengtoworkwithWuTiaoqing,thegeneralofficeofBeiyangguanRailwayBureau,toplanandorganizematters.InearlyNovember,WuTiaoqingdraftedaspecificplanfortheschool'sopeningandfinancingmethods,andatthesametimeformulatedthe"RailwaySchoolRegulations",requestingtheMingandQinggovernmenttofileacasefortheformalopening.Notlongafter,theQinggovernmentofficiallyapprovedtheopeningoftheRailwaySchoolandappointedWuTiaoqingastheheadoftheBeiyangOfficialRailwayBureauandconcurrentlyasthefirstheadoftheRailwaySchool(principal).
TheLateQingDynasty
OnNovember20,1896,theBeiyangRailwayAdministrationpublished"ConfessionsofRailwaySchool"and"RailwaySchool"ArticlesofAssociation,announcingtheestablishmentoftheShanhaiguanBeiyangRailwayOfficialSchoolandthestartofenrollment.TherailwayschoolwasoriginallyscheduledtobeopenedonthesiteoftheBeiyangguanRailwayBureauEngineeringSub-bureauinShanhaiguan,butthebuildingoftheEngineeringSub-bureaucouldnotbevacatedforrepairsastheschoolstarted.Itwasagreedthattheschoolpremisesshouldbetemporarilyborrowedforclasses,andtheteachers,books,andequipmentoftheBeiyangWestSchoolcanbeborrowed.Soonaftertheschoolstarted,thestudentsofthetwoschoolshadfrictions,whicharousedtheconcernofShanhaiguanRailwaySupervisionMinisterHuYufen.WhenHuinspectedtheShanhaiguanRailways,heorderedtherailwayschooltomovetoShanhaiguanasoriginallyagreed.OnNovember22,1897,theschoolmovedtoShanhaiguan.
OnMarch17,1900,thefirstandsecondclassstudentsoftheShanhaiguanBeiyangRailwayOfficialSchoolgraduated.Only17outof39peoplereceivedadiploma.ThesewerethefirstbatchofregularcollegegraduatesincivilengineeringdisciplinesinthehistoryofmodernChineseeducation.Inthesameyear,theEight-NationAlliedForcesinvadedChina;onJune17,theEight-NationAlliedForcesoccupiedDaguFort,andschoolstudentsandChineseandforeignteachersleftinordertoescapethewar.OnSeptember30,theBritishandRussianalliedforcesinvadedShanhaiguan,andtheschoolbuildingwasoccupiedbytheTsaristRussianarmy.Occupation,thehistoryoftheRailwaySchoolinShanhaiguanwasinterrupted.
OnMay7,1905,inviewoftherapiddevelopmentofrailwayconstructionandtheshortageoftalents,theministersofsupervisionoftherailwaysinsideandoutsidethecustomsYuanShikaiandHuYufenorderedtherailwaybureausinsideandoutsidethecustomstoimmediatelystartpreparationsfortherestorationoftheShanhaiguanRailwayOfficialSchool.OnOctober15th,ZhouChanglingandWuJiaxiu,theGeneralOfficeoftheRoadBureau,formallyselectedaschoolsitewestofTangshanRailwayStation.
OnMarch27,1906,theRailwaySupervisoryOfficeoftheQingGovernmentapprovedtheKaipingMiningBureau’srequestfortheschooltoaddaminingdepartment,anddeterminedthattheschool’snamewaschangedtoTangshanRoadandMineSchool.OnAugust3,theschoolenrolled121studentsinTianjin,Shanghai,HongKongandotherplaces.
InlateFebruary1907,theschoolofficiallyopened.Studentsweredividedintotwoclasses,ClassAandClassB.ThiswasthefirsttimesinceTangshanwasfounded.
OnJanuary20,1908,theMinistryofPostsandCommunicationsissuedtheschoolseal.TheschoolwastransferredtotheMinistryofPostsandCommunicationsfromtheRoadBureau,andtheschoolfundswereissuedbytheMinistryofPostsandCommunications.
IntheearlydaysoftheRepublicofChina
OnJanuary19,1912,aftertheestablishmentoftheRepublicofChina,theMinistryofPostsandCommunicationswasrenamedtheMinistryofCommunications,andtheschoolwasdirectlyunderthejurisdictionoftheMinistryofCommunications,andlaterrenamedTangshanRailwaySchool.

InSeptember1913,theschoolwasorderedtochangeitsnametoTangshanTechnicalCollege,butitwasnotimmediatelyimplemented.InAugust1914,theMinistryofTransportationissuedacustomsdefenseandtheschoolofficiallychangeditsname.
OnMay4,1919,theMayFourthMovementbrokeout.OnMay24,allstudentsintheschooldecidedtostrikeandissuedadeclarationinsupportofthepatrioticmovement.
OnJuly1,1921,JiaotongUniversitywasformallyestablishedwithBeijingSchool,TangshanSchool,andShanghaiSchool.
InJuly1923,theschoolwasrenamedTangshanUniversityundertheorderoftheMinistryofCommunications.ThesubjectsoftheBeijingschoolwereincorporatedintotheTangandShanghaischools.
Atthebeginningof1927,theJinxianbranchofTangshanUniversityoftheMinistryofCommunicationswasestablished,andtheschoolsitewassettothewestofJinxianRailwayStation.
InFebruary1928,theMinistryofTransportationofBeiyangGovernmentorderedTangshanUniversitytochangeitsnametoTangshanJiaotongUniversity.OnJune15,theNationalGovernmentannouncedthereunificationoftheNorthandtheSouth.Onthe29th,theNationalGovernment’sMinistryofTransportationrenamedTangshanJiaotongUniversityastheSecondJiaotongUniversityoftheMinistryofTransportation.OnSeptember4,theschoolwasrenamedTangshanSchoolofCivilEngineering,JiaotongUniversity.InDecember,JiaotongUniversitywastransferredtothejurisdictionoftheMinistryofRailways,collectivelyreferredtoasJiaotongUniversityoftheMinistryofRailways,dividedintoShanghaiHeadquarters,TangshanSchoolofCivilEngineeringofJiaotongUniversity,andBeipingRailwayManagementSchool.
InMarch1929,theJinxianbranchofTangshanJiaotongUniversitybecameindependent,calledNortheastJiaotongUniversity,andZhangXueliangservedasthepresident.OnJuly2,theMinistryofRailwayspromulgatedthe"TemporaryOrganizationalOutlineofJiaotongUniversity",stipulatingthatthecollegesofJiaotongUniversityinTangshan,Beiping,andShanghaiweremergedandcollectivelyreferredtoasJiaotongUniversityoftheMinistryofRailways.
InMay1934,theschoolwasrenamedTangshanCollegeofEngineering,JiaotongUniversity.OnJuly17,theMinistryofEducationorderedtheschooltoberenamedTangshanCollegeofEngineering,NationalJiaotongUniversity,andPekingRailwayManagementJointCollege.
OnNovember25,1935,thepseudo-"JidongAnti-CommunistAutonomousGovernment"wasestablishedinTongzhou,and"specialization"wasbrewinginNorthChina.TangshanInstituteofTechnologyheldastudentmeetinganddecidedtostrikeimmediatelyinresponsetotheBeijingstudentpatrioticmovement.
ChangesintheAnti-JapaneseWar
OnJuly7,1937,theLugouBridgeIncidentbrokeout.Itwasasummervacation.Therewerenotmanyteachersandstudentsstayingattheschool.Onthe17th,theTangshanschoolbuildingwasoccupiedbytheJapanesearmy.Unprepared.Aftertheincident,theNationalistGovernmentwasunabletotakecareofit.Theteachersandstudentswerescattered,andtheschoolwasdisbanded.Thepreciousinstruments,equipment,librarycollections,andarchivesaccumulatedoverdecadesofmiserablemanagementwereallabandonedtotheJapaneseinvaders.InlateJuly,theMinistryofEducationsubmittedtotheExecutiveYuanforapproval:"AlluniversitiesacrossthecountryareunderthemanagementoftheMinistryofEducation,andtheschoolsofJiaotongUniversityundertheMinistryofTransportationwillbeledbytheMinistryofEducationfromAugust1st."ThiswasnotimmediatelyimplementedduetotheoutbreakoftheWarofResistance.InOctober,twoofficesofTangshanJiaotongUniversityinShanghaiandNanchangwereestablished,andtheresponsiblepersonnelwereappointedtopreparefortheresumptionofclassesinNanchang.Inordernottointerrupttheenrollmentworkin1937,whenthere-schoolworkhasnotbeenrecognizedbytheMinistryofEducation,theenrollmentadvertisementspublishedinnewspapersinTianjin,ShanghaiandotherplacesareenrollingstudentsunderthenameofMaoYisheng,withtheheadline:"MaoYisheng"Recruitmentnotice."
AftertheLugouqiaoIncident,thedeanofthePekingRailwayManagementSchoolofJiaotongUniversityignoredthecollegeandwentsouthalone.Noonewasinchargeoftheschool.SometeachersandstudentsofthePingyuanAcademywereunwillingtofallintotheenemy'sterritoryandbecameslavestothecountry,andtheywentsouthoneafteranother.WiththehelpofProfessorWangFangquanandthealumni,theMinistryofEducationdecidedonJanuary29,1938thatthePingyuanAcademywastemporarilychangedtotheDepartmentofRailwayManagementandjoinedtheTangyuanAcademy.
InlateNovember1937,alumniDuZhenyuan,directorofZhejiang-JiangxiRailwayBureau,afterdiscussingwithalumniHouJiayuan,directorofXiangqianRailwayBureau,wrotetoProfessorHuangShouhengofNanchangOffice:Inviewofthedevelopmentofthewarsituation,thesuggestionistostayinHunanXiangtan(theresidentofXiangqianRailwayBureau)resumedschoolinordertoavoiddelayingstudents'schoolwork,andexpressedfullsupportforthealmamatertoresumeschoolwork.AlumniDuZhenyuan’ssuggestionwasendorsedbyProfessorHuangShouhengandotherprofessors,whodecidedtoresumeclassesinXiangtanonDecember15.TheNanchangOfficeofTangshanJiaotongUniversitydisseminatednewsoftheschool'sresumptionofschoolinXiangtanthroughnewspapersandradiostationsinWuhan,Nanchangandotherplaces.TheteachersandstudentsrushedtoXiangtanthroughvariouschannels,overcomingnumerousdifficulties.OnDecember15,TangshanCollegeofEngineeringofJiaotongUniversityhelditsopeningceremonyinXiangtan.

InMay1938,duetotherapidincreaseinthenumberofstudents,teachersgraduallyarrived.MovedtoYangjiatan,Xiangxiang.InYangjiatan,fourbighouses(whichbelongedtotheresidenceofQingYunguiGovernorLiuYuezhao)wererentedastemporaryschoolbuildings.TheseniorstudentsoftheDepartmentofMiningandMetallurgywerestillstudyingatHunanUniversityinChangsha.Atthistime,thenumberofstudentsintheschoolhadreachedmorethan200.OnOctober25,theJapanesearmyoccupiedWuhanandattackedChangshaagaininearlyNovember.TheKuomintangtroopsimplementedtheso-called"scorchedearthpolicy"beforepreparingtoabandonthecityandflee.TangYuanwasclosetoChangsha.Atthistime,itwasnolongerpossibletocontinueclasses.Soonafter,theschoolauthoritiesdecidedtomoveinward.TheinternalmigrationteamsetofffromYangjiatanonNovember17andheadedsouth.Onthe27th,allteachersandstudentsarrivedinGuilin.Theschool'sbooks,equipment,files,andsomestudents’clothingwerealllost.InordertoavoidanotherbombingbytheJapaneseplane,theteachersandstudentshurriedlyleftGuilinandwenttoanormalschoolinLiangjiangTownabout15kilometersawayfromthecity.OnDecember9,teachersandstudentssetofffromLiangjiangTowninbatchesandcontinuedonfootwestward,passingbyYongfu,Huangmian,Luzhai,Luorong,Xiaoxingovernight,andheadingtowardsLiuzhou.ArrivedinLiuzhouonDecember15andresidedinChengnanLongchengMiddleSchool.Duetotheundecidedlocationofthecollege’sinternalrelocationandthecoldwinter,DeanMaoaskedeveryonetorestinLiuzhouandstandby,anddiscussedwhethertogotoKunmingorGuizhou.DeanMaowenttoGuiyang,Chongqingandotherplacestoinvestigateandcomparerepeatedly,andaskedtheMinistryofEducationforinstructions.StrivetoagreetomovetoPingyue,Guizhou.OnJanuary13,1939,theteachersandstudentsoftheschoolleftLiuzhouandarrivedatYishanviaSandu,DatangandOudong.Atthistime,ZhejiangUniversityhasmovedtoYishan.PresidentZhuKezhenisanalumnusoftheschool.OnJanuary18,withthehelpofhimandotheralumni,hesentacartosendteachersandstudentstoHechi.WalkingfromHechitoLiuzhaiatthejunctionofGuizhouandGuizhouviaNandan,onfootfromHechi,onJanuary27,ItookacarfromGuizhouProvincialHighwayBureauandarrivedatMachangpingnearPingyueonJanuary28.Afteranother18milesofwalking,IfinallyreachedPingyueintheSpringFestival.
InAugust1941,undertheorderoftheMinistryofEducation,theNationalChiaoTungUniversityTangshanSchoolofEngineeringmergedwiththeNationalChiaoTungUniversityBeipingRailwayManagementSchoolandmovedtoPingyue.Inordertoconsiderthehistoryofthetwoinstitutes,itwasrenamedtheNationalJiaotongUniversityTangshanEngineeringandBeipingRailwayManagementJointCollege.Aftertheorderarrivedatschool,thesentimentwasinanuproar.CivilengineeringstudentscalledtheMinistryofEducationtoprotest.
InJanuary1942,followingtheprotestsofthestudents,theMinistryofEducationchangedthepreviousorderasfollows:NationalJiaotongUniversityTangshanEngineering,BeipingRailwayManagementJointCollegewasreorganizedintoNationalJiaotongUniversityGuizhouBranch.ThereareTangshanCollegeofEngineering(withtwodepartmentsofcivilengineeringandminingandmetallurgy)andPekingRailwayManagementCollege(withonedepartmentofrailwaymanagement).
InearlyNovember1944,Xiangguifell,andtheJapanesecapturedDushan,Guizhou.TheeasternpartofGuizhouwasinchaos,andPingyuewasindesperation.Theschoolfinallydecided:todisbandonthespot,togatherinChongqing,andseethenewspaperontheresumptiondate.TheprofessorspubliclyrecommendedProfessorGuYisunandProfessorWangJunhaotoenterSichuanfirstandcontactalumnitofindaschoollocation.Afterseveralyearsofhardwork,mostofthebooksandinstrumentsaccumulatedfromnothingwerelostduetohastymigration.OnDecember4,alltheteachersandstudentsleftthePingyueschoolbuilding,whichhadbeenoperatingforsixyears.MostoftheteachersandstudentsarrivedinChongqingattheendoftheyear.
InMarch1945,PresidentLuoZhongchenandMaoYishenginvitedalumnifromTangandPingtodiscusstheresumptionsite.BecausetheMinistryofCommunicationshadatrainingcenterfortransportationtechniciansinDingjiaao,BishanCounty,Thehouseisavailableforuse,andclasseswillresumeatDingjia'ao,Bishan,whenitisdecidedtotemporarilymove.OnFebruary15th,afterthenewspaperaskedteachersandstudentstogathertogetheratDingjia'ao,mostoftheteachersandstudentsarrived.Onthatday,theschoolofficiallyresumedclasses.OnAugust6,theMinistryofEducationorderedtheschooltomovetoGansuafterthesummervacationandrenamedtheGansubranchofNationalJiaotongUniversity.OnAugust15,theJapaneseimperialistsannouncedtheirunconditionalsurrender,andtheproposaltomovetoGansuwasdismissed.Intheautumnofthesameyear,theMinistryofEducationapprovedtheTangPingtwohospitalstomovebacktoTangshanandBeiping.
LiberationofFreshmen
OnMarch8,1946,undertheinstructionoftheMinistryofEducation:TheExecutiveYuanapprovedtheTangYuantomovebacktoTangshan.OnApril9,theTangshanandPingInstitutesrestoredtheNationalTangshanInstituteofTechnologyandtheNationalBeipingRailwayManagementInstitute,andmovedbacktoTangshanandBeipingPlain.JiaotongUniversityonceagainbecamethreeindependentuniversities.
OnNovember11,1948,duetotherapiddevelopmentoftheWarofLiberation,thecallsforschoolrelocationwereincreasing,andtheheartsofthepeoplewereturbulent.Thecoursescouldnotbecontinued,andclassesbegantobesuspendedonthatday.Subsequently,theteachersandstudentswhoadvocatedsouthwardrelocationformedaschoolrelocationcommitteeandsentthepioneertroops.OnNovember17,theacademicaffairsmeetingheldameeting.Afteradebate,itwasdecidedtomovesouth,andteachers,studentsandstaffbegantomovesouthinbatches.

OnJanuary23,1949,theschoolheldapreparatorymeetingfortheTangshanInstituteofTechnology'sresumptioncommitteeinthealumnihall.Afterthemeeting,theleft-behindofficeandthepreparatorycommitteeforre-schoolcontactedtheschoolpersonnelscatteredinTianjinandBeipingtostriveforthemtoreturntoTangassoonaspossible;andnegotiatedwithrelevantunitsinTianjintoaskthemtohelptransportthebooksandequipmentthattheteachersandstudentsdidnothavetimetotakeaway.WaittobeshippedbacktoTangshan.OnJanuary10,1949,aftertheestablishmentoftheMinistryofRailwaysoftheChinesePeople'sRevolutionaryMilitaryCommission,itpreparedtotakeovertheTangshanInstituteofTechnology.AsearlyasAugust1948,theNorthChinaJiaotongCollegeinShijiazhuangwasassignedtothePingjinfrontlinetoparticipateinthepost-liberationtakeoverwork.ThecollegehasagroupofprofessionalandworkingcadreswiththesameorsimilarnatureasTangshanInstituteofTechnologyandBeipingRailwayManagementInstitute.Therefore,TheMinistryofRailwaysoftheMilitaryCommissionselectedcadresfromtheNorthChinaTransportationInstitutetotakechargeoftheworkoftheTangAcademy.InApril1949,theMinistryofRailwaysoftheMilitaryCommissiontookoverthepartofTangshanInstituteofTechnologyandestablishedare-schoolcommittee;inJune,underthearrangementoftheMinistryofRailwaysoftheCentralMilitaryCommission,theteachersandstudentsinexileinShanghaireturnedtoTangshan;July8,theChinesePeople'sRevolutionTheMinistryofRailwaysoftheMilitaryCommissiondecidedtomergeTangshanInstituteofTechnology,BeipingRailwayManagementInstitute,andNorthChinaJiaotongInstitutetoformChinaJiaotongUniversity,whichisdividedintoTangshanInstituteofTechnologyandBeijingRailwayManagementInstitute.TheheadquartersofChinaJiaotongUniversityislocatedatNo.34,DongjiaominLane,Beiping;TheMinistryofRailwaysoftheMilitaryCommissionheldatakeoverceremonyattheTangshanInstituteofTechnologyandofficiallytookovertheNationalTangshanInstituteofTechnology.
In1949,mostoftheNorthChinaJiaotongCollegewasmergedintothecollege,anditwascombinedwiththecollegetoformtheTangshanInstituteofTechnologyofChinaJiaotongUniversity(thepredecessoroftheNorthChinaJiaotongInstitutewasZhangjiakouRailwayInstitute,whichwasestablishedinOctober1945.Thefirstrailwaycollegeintheliberatedarea;inOctober1946,duetotheKuomintang’sfull-scaleoffensiveagainsttheliberatedarea,thePeople’sLiberationArmyvoluntarilywithdrewfromZhangjiakouCity.ZhangjiakouRailwayCollegewastransferredtoPingshanCounty,theoldbaseofJixi,andlaterwithZhangjiakouIndustrialCollegeandZhangjiakouCommercialSchoolInNovember1947,thegeneraldepartmentoftheschoolwasmovedtoShijiazhuangandrenamedNorthChinaTransportationCollege.ItwasoriginallyundertheleadershipoftheMinistryofCommunicationsoftheNorthChinaPeople’sGovernment.AftertheestablishmentoftheMinistryofRailwaysoftheMilitaryCommission,itwasundertheleadershipoftheMinistryofRailwaysoftheMilitaryCommission.).
InJune1950,theformerMinisterofRailwaysofthePeople’sRepublicofChinaTengDaiyuanheldasymposium.InadditiontothetwopresidentsofChinaJiaotongUniversity,MaoYishengandJinShixuan,themeetingalsoinvitedthedirectoroftheShanghaiJiaotongUniversitySchoolCouncilCommitteememberWuYouxunparticipated.WuYouxunraiseddifferentopinionsonthenameofChinaJiaotongUniversity:"YournameisChinaJiaotongUniversity.IsourShanghaiJiaotongUniversitycalledForeignJiaotongUniversity?"TheformerMinistryofRailwaysacceptedWuYouxun'sopinion.InAugust,theformerCouncilofGovernmentorderedtherenameofChinaJiaotongUniversitytoNorthernJiaotongUniversity,andTangshanInstituteofTechnologywassubsequentlyrenamedasNorthernJiaotongUniversityTangshanInstituteofTechnology.
RailwayInstitute
In1952,collegesanduniversitiesacrossthecountryadjustedtheirdepartments,NorthernJiaotongUniversitywasabolished,andthetwoinstitutesunderitsjurisdictionwererenamedTangshanRailwayInstituteandBeijingRailwayInstitute.Afterthissummer,theschool’sminingdepartment,metallurgydepartment,chemicalengineeringdepartment,architecturedepartment,signalspecialistdepartment,civilengineeringdepartment,waterconservancygroup,electricalengineeringdepartmentandtelecommunicationsgroupweretransferredtotheBeijingInstituteofMiningandTechnology,BeijingInstituteofIronandSteel,BeijingJiaotongUniversity,TianjinUniversities,TsinghuaUniversityandotheruniversities.
In1960,theCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChinaapprovedTangshanRailwayInstitutetobecomeoneofthe64nationalkeyuniversities.
In1964,inaccordancewiththespiritoftheCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChinatobuildthethirdline,theschoolbegantomovefromTangshan,HebeitoEmei,Sichuan.

OnJuly15,1979,theformerMinistryofRailwaysdecidedthattheChengduRailwayTechnicalSchoolaffiliatedtotheformerChengduRailwayBureauandtheChengduRailwayEngineeringSchoolaffiliatedtotheSecondEngineeringBureauoftheformerMinistryofRailwayswereplacedunderSouthwestJiaotongUniversity,twoschoolsItwasrenamed"SouthwestJiaotongUniversitySecondarySchool"andwaslocatedinChengdu.

科研成就
学校围绕高速铁路、磁浮交通,新型城轨、真空管道超高速(1000+)、超级高铁等领域大力开展基础研究与原始创新,构建了以世界公认的“沈氏理论”和“翟孙模型”为标志的铁路大系统动力学基础研究体系。
截至2018年12月,学校科技成果4次入选“中国高等学校十大科技进展”;在轨道交通领域获国家三大科技奖励41项,其中特等奖2项,一等奖6项;在同济大学复杂工程管理研究院编制的《我国工程建设领域重大科技创新研究报告(2000-2017)》中名列全国第一;40年间,学校参加了几乎所有的中国轨道交通工程的基础研究、技术开发、规划实施和建设运营,参与解决了青藏铁路、京沪高铁、港珠澳大桥等一大批超级工程的关键技术难题。

馆藏资源
截至2016年底,学校图书馆及各院系分馆、资料室累积纸质藏书量逾300余万册,其中中文书刊268万册,外文书刊32万册,各类型中外文电子数据库269个,折合馆藏量1250余万册;学校图书馆是首批四川省古籍重点保护单位,藏有古籍文献2万余册,其中包括清廷御赐给我校的《钦定古今图书集成》5044册,清代前期刻印的《六经疑问》、《禹贡锥指》、《周礼述注》等珍贵善本古籍数十种。

《西南交通大学学报》1954年创刊,主要刊登工程技术类理论研究、应用研究、实验研究、学术讨论等方面的学术论文以及科技信息报道;中文核心期刊,中国力学、岩土工程、机械工程、无线电等文摘的引文源。被美国EiCompendex、俄罗斯《文摘杂志》、德国《数学文摘》,以及国内的《中国科学引文数据库》、《中国科技论文统计源期刊》等收录。

《西南交通大学学报(社会科学版)》2000年创刊,是CSSCI中文社会科学引文索引(2017—2018)来源期刊(含扩展版)、《Caj-cd规范》获奖期刊。
《JournalofModernTransportation》《现代交通学报(英文版)》1993年创刊,主要刊登、轨道交通类、航空、水运和道路交通方面的研究论文;被爱思唯尔(Elsevier)旗下的Scopus数据库和WebofScience数据库ESCI收录,曾连续三届荣获教育部“中国高校特色科技期刊”称号。
《交通运输工程与信息学报》主要反映西南交通大学、中国国内外科技工作者在交通运输工程与信息与其相关学科方向的最新科技成果、优秀设计、制造与新技术的应用开发,被中国科技论文与引文数据库收录。
《路基工程》1983年创刊,是北京大学《中文核心期刊要目总览》来源期刊(2004年版)。
《制冷与空调》1985年创刊,主要刊登制冷与空调行业的最新科技成果、学术论文,介绍新技术、新工艺、新产品,通报行业最新动态和信息。2003年入选“中文核心期刊(遴选)数据库期刊”、“中国期刊全文数据库全文收录期刊”及“中国学术期刊综合评价数据库统计刊源”,2007年入选中国科技论文统计源期刊(中国科技核心期刊)。
《BiosurfaceandBiotribology》(生物表面与生物摩擦学)主要关注生物系统的表面、界面以及相关摩擦学问题,由西南交通大学和爱思唯尔(Elsevier)合作创建,入选中国科技期刊国际影响力提升计划。

国际合作
截至2019年6月,学校同美国伊利诺伊大学香槟分校、意大利米兰理工大学、俄罗斯交通大学等59个国家和地区的203所高校及科研机构建立了合作关系,与英国利兹大学合作成立西南交大-利兹学院,“2+2”“本硕4+1”“中法4+4”等留学、游学、访学项目涵盖全部年级;作为中国政府指定高校,与印度铁道部合作援建印度铁道大学;有3个国家外专创新引智基地,办有3个国际学术期刊。
政产学研
截至2019年1月,学校与中国铁路总公司、中国中铁、中国铁建、中国中车、中国中交等深入合作;与成都市共建世界一流大学,打造“环交大智慧城”,助力成都建设世界轨道交通之都;学校对口支援建设西藏大学、新疆农业大学,精准扶贫马尔康市、阿坝县、峨边县;学校设有上海研究院、深圳研究院、青岛研究院、天府新区研究院等6个产业研究院和国家级大学科技园、国家级科技企业孵化器、国家技术转移中心,建立了“科技—孵化—产业”互助成果转化模式,在全国率先探索开展职务科技成果混合所有制改革。
文化传统
形象标识
西南交通大学校徽沿用的是唐山交通大学土木系李汶教授设计的校徽。
校徽成盾牌状,在校徽的左上角是地质锤;右上角是“唐山”字样和铁轨;左下角是荒地上的两棵大树;右下角为水准仪。在大树与水准仪之间是“交大”字样;中间的“西南交通大学”字样是后人加上的。
整个校徽体现了西南交通大学当时作为一所理工科高校的特点。
精神文化
校训:精勤求学,敦笃励志,果毅力行,忠恕任事
1930年5月2日,交通大学公布校训:“精勤求学,敦笃励志,果毅力行,忠恕任事”。
1947年5月15日,在唐山工学院(西南交通大学)建校51周年,唐山复校42周年校庆之际,学校重新确定原交通大学之校训为唐山工学院之院训。
学校精神:竢实扬华,自强不息
1916年春,教育部在北京举行全国高等学校作业成绩展览评比,学校以94分的成绩获全国第一名。同年12月,教育部为此除给学校颁发优等奖状外,还由教育总长范源濂特奖“竢实扬华”匾额一方。
“竢”就是等待的意思;“实”则有三层意思,即果实、坚实、诚实和实事求是;“扬”有飞扬,传播之意;“华”有中华简称、华丽、美丽等意。四个字组合在一起,有等待果实成熟,即寓意培养出人才,同时使人才更加务实、诚实,从而扬我中华,振兴中华,复兴中华。“扬华”也有扬弃浮华、追求一种务实的、不尚虚华之意。
“自强不息”是学校在长期的颠沛流离的办学经历中总结出来的,该词语出自《周易》的“天行健,君子以自强不息”,原意为天上的日月星辰是不分昼夜、永恒运动的,所以“天”是“刚健”的,人应效法天,积极进取,永不停息。对交大来说,其中有四层意思:永不停息、知难而上、完善自我和艰苦奋斗。
“竢实扬华,自强不息”的交大精神包含有四种内涵:首先是“爱国至上、振兴中华”;其次是“严谨严格、求真务实”;再次是“爱校如家、敬业奉献”;最后是“开拓创新、艰苦奋斗”。
校歌
1929年10月,交通大学决定确立校歌和院歌。经1930年1月和5月专案审查委员会两次审议讨论,《国立交通大学唐山工程学院院歌》唱响在唐山校园。院歌歌词由曾任唐院国文和历史教员的国学大师吴稚晖先生创作。

1947年5月15日,学校举行了唐山复校暨51周年校庆活动,重新公布了修改后的院歌。2011年,西南交通大学举行115周年校庆,将《国立交通大学唐山工程学院院歌》曲谱稍作修改后,确立为《西南交通大学校歌》。
