ThePrincetonInstituteforAdvancedStudywasfundedbybrotherandsisterLouisBumberg,adepartmentstoremerchant.InreturnforNewJerseyresidents,theyoriginallyhopedtodonatemoneytoestablishamedicalinstitution.ButunderthepersuasionofeducatorandthefirstdeanoftheInstituteofAdvancedStudies,AbrahamFlexner,theychosetoestablishtheinstitutenearPrincetonUniversity.FlexnerisagraduateofJohnsHopkinsUniversity,thefirstresearchuniversityintheUnitedStates.Hisideaistoestablishaplatoniccollegeofpuretheoreticalresearch.TheAcademydoesnotawarddegrees,andallmembersareresearcherswhohaveobtaineddoctoraldegrees.

Althoughtheresearchinstituteandtheuniversityhavenomutualaffiliation,theyhaveadeeprelationship.TheinstitutefirstborrowedtheofficeofthePrincetonDepartmentofMathematics,andthemainpersonnelsuchasJohnvonNeumannandVanBurenalsocamefromtheDepartmentofMathematics.ManyprofessorsintheInstitutealsoworkpart-timeasPrincetonprofessors.

MathematicianQiuChengtongisthefirstChinesescholartobehiredasatenuredprofessorattheAmericanAcademyofAdvancedStudies.ProfessorYangZhenningalsospentmorethanadecadeinthegoldenyearsofhisacademiccareerattheInstituteofAdvancedStudies.

RobertOppenheimerservedasthedeanoftheInstituteforalongtimeafterWorldWarII.

Britishmathematicalphysicist,receivedaPhDfromCambridgeUniversityin1971,andiscurrentlythePrincetonHigherSchoolDeanofResearchInstitute.Heisfamousforhisresearchonstringtheory.In1997,hewontheDiracMedaltogetherwithDavidOliver.
